Lemon Avenue, just a few doors down from the intersection Myrtle and Lime.

Details: Saturday July 31, 7-10PM, 400-500 Block South Myrtle Avenue, Monrovia CA 91016 (pic gets bigger with a click).

Just a little disclosure…and a shameless plug with no pressure to do anything on your part, but I will be in this Art Walk showing my stuff. Not that it matters, but I also serve on the Board of MAFA as the Jury Committee Chair and all around busy body.

" } ["wfw"]=> array(2) { ["commentrss#"]=> int(1) ["commentrss"]=> string(91) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/29/saturday-731-art-walk-and-free-ceramics-for-the-kidlets/feed/" } ["http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/"]=> array(2) { ["comments#"]=> int(1) ["comments"]=> string(1) "0" } ["http://rssnamespace.org/feedburner/ext/1.0"]=> array(2) { ["origlink#"]=> int(1) ["origlink"]=> string(86) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/29/saturday-731-art-walk-and-free-ceramics-for-the-kidlets/" } ["summary#"]=> int(1) ["summary"]=> string(257) "The First 50 kids 12 and under to show up at the Paint n Play 2 Art Studio and Gallery Saturday evening at 7PM will get a FREE ceramic project to complete while their parents visit the Art Walk. (I know!) Whatever did people do for fun on a Saturday night, aside from bathing? They would go see amazing spectacles called “Panoramas.” Starting in 1792, 360 degree paintings were installed in circular venues and you viewed them from the inside. Don’t tell James Cameron this, but they were even in 3d! Faux terrain elements were placed in front of the images to enhance the paintings themselves. Even Disney took a cue from this style and created CircleVision 360.

Another version of the Panorama experience was the Moving Panorama. Images were painted on huge panels and scrolled through in a theater accompanied by live narration, music and sound effects. The original Moving Picture Show!

What does this have to do with Los Angeles? LA is home to the Velaslavasay Panorama “an exhibition hall, theatre and garden dedicated to the production and presentation of unusual visual experiences, including those of the 360-degree variety.” They research and preserve fragile works of mass entertainment from centuries gone by. You can visit the gardens and exhibits during the day and for the next four weekends, you can see a Moving Picture Show.

Every Friday and Saturday night until August 21, The Velaslavasay Panorama will be showing “The Grand Moving Mirror Of California” a modern panel based on an 1853 script about the journey to get to California during the Gold Rush. Adventures around Cape Horn, views of historic California cities and “famous natural treasures” are part of the story.

This Saturday, July 31, is a fundraiser for the museum. You get a gourmet dinner before the showing of the Moving Picture and help raise funds for this fascinating non-profit. Click here for more details on that event.

The Velaslavasay Panorama
In the Historic Union Theater in the West Adams District
1122 West 24th Street
Los Angeles, CA 90007

Open to the public on Fridays, Saturday and Sundays from 12-6pm
Street parking only.

I’m buying tickets for Friday’s show…join in!

Cross section of a Panorama rotunda

Ack!! Clearly, more thought went into the development of classes and fitness programs than you might think on first glance. Emma Ridley, the owner of this fitness emporium cogently explains: “At Goddess Fitness there is no right or wrong way to move, it is just movement.” I don’t know about you, but I feel fitter already. I know I’m ridiculously retro, nay, even prehistoric, to question the empowering nature of stripper heels and hairless twats–I admit, my feminism got beached before the third wave–but can we at least agree that these things are not “fitness”? Near the end of the walk, I met a reporter for BBC America who said, “I’ve been searching for a sense of community ever since I moved to L.A. and this is the first time I think I’ve found it.” To me, that summed up the entire experience perfectly.

Looking out at the crowd of people gathered to walk for a man most of them didn’t know – families with kids and dogs in tow, everyone smiling and in good spirits – it restored my outlook on our neighborhood and once again made me realize how privileged I am to live in a community where people will join together for something as simple as remembering a man who walked our neighborhood almost every day for 30 years.

I’d like to extend a special thanks to:

Brandon Fuller for creating the Facebook event page and silverlakewalkingman.com

Howie via NeighborGoods.net for letting us borrow the megaphone for the event

Christopher Daniels for helping with coordination, creating the flyer and for communicating with Dr. Abrams’ friends and family for us

Kevin West for being there, despite his grief over the loss of his friend, and for sharing the note from Dr. Abrams’ wife, Cindy

Nick Potter for stimulating the initial idea for the walk

My lovely fiance’ Harold for holding the megaphone during all of the speeches

L.A. Somewhere along the way in him doing what he was doing without trying, he just created this regularity and this routine that the people who lived here could count on, and it was a part of their lives and part of their day just to see him walking down the street. And that’s something a lot of us don’t have. It became a part of just living here and that’s gone.” – Kevin West, a close friend of Dr. Abrams

“A piece of the soul of Silver Lake is gone…we’re a quirky, weird, funky place where people do take their shirts off and walk around and you don’t know whether they have a job or not, and we still love them. For all the changes in Silver Lake has gone through and the positive things that have happened, we’ve never lost our soul until now — there’s a piece of it that’s just missing. I know it’s a complicated story and I know so many people here who loved Marc and who were served by him and he really was the community… We will find a fitting tribute.” – L.A. City Council President, Eric Garcetti

“Sunday couldn’t have been a more perfect day for the hundreds who gathered for the walk. Some even honored him with green shorts, a newspaper in hand and going shirtless, just as Abrams would every day.” – Zach Behrens, LAist

“This afternoon my husband and I went to Silver Lake to walk in honor of Dr. Marc Arbrams, the man known for strolling shirtless throughout this east side neighborhood. It was, hands down, one of the best Sunday afternoons I’ve ever spent in L.A…It was quite a site to behold that many men, women, kids and dogs all walking together to honor someone…I bumped into several good friends (Adam, Patrick, Jen, and Vicki – great to see you all!) then capped the whole afternoon off with a very delicious brunch at Millie’s. I can only imagine that if Dr. Abrams were able to look down from on high and see us all, he’d be very, very proud.” - Alex Cohen – KPCC, All Things Considered Blog

“Thanks so much to those who organized and participated in this wonderful tribute and community gathering in honor of Dr. Marc. I wasn’t sure I could do the whole walk, but I made it! I know that chatting with people I met along the way was one big reason why. The sadness is lifted a bit by realizing how the good doc …is still encouraging us to all be strong walkers and kind neighbors.” – Jill Fields, via Facebook event page

“Thanks for putting this event together. It was a great turnout and wonderful to see tributes to him along the route. People even waved and clapped from their front porches in support. RIP Marc.” – Paul Shkut, via Facebook event page

“Thanks for organizing, it was a great day and memorial. Awesome to see the community get together.” – Saveida Vazquez, via Facebook event page

“What a special way to remember Dr. Marc. The memory of all of us coming together will fill the emptiness I see in that bike lane where he always was! Thank you to everyone in the neighborhood. I’ll be there anytime to do it again. The energy from the group was amazing.” – Calethia DeConto, via Facebook event page

“How wonderful to see the community come together! Let’s do that walk once a month!” – Kista Cook, via Facebook event page

“It IS great to walk! Thanks Silverlake walker for showing us the light!” – April Napier, via Facebook event page

Some Coverage of the Walk:

Saying goodbye to “Walking Man,” with a walk.— New York Times

Friends remember Silver Lake Walking Man with a walkabout.— L.A. All their vegetables are from their very large ranch, so were pretty good. They also have fresh juice (orange, grapefruit and tomato) so that was a treat. There is a bakery too, but we got there too late to try anything. The restaurant is open from 6am to 10pm, and you can get snacks in the bar til 11, so it’s a pretty good get-out-of-the-car stop half-way between LA and SF. They have an amazing pool too. Just sayin’!!! C’mon, it was 90 degrees at 10PM!!!!! And I’d been cooped up in the car for hours!

The other place we found is 90 minutes north of LA at the Buttonwillow exit. It’s a family owned Indian restaurant. It’s kind of pricey… their entrees are $12-15 bucks for veggies and the chicken dishes were $15-20, but their appetizers were good, all in the $5 range. The mango lassi really hits the spot when it’s blazing outside. I’ve heard the Mexican Restaurant, “Tita’s” at this exit is pretty excellent, with homemade pupusas, but my sweetheart doesn’t like Mexican food, so he always vetoes it.

Anyway, these two get my votes if you want to avoid fast food on the 5, when driving north of LA. Any other suggestions out there?

" } ["wfw"]=> array(2) { ["commentrss#"]=> int(1) ["commentrss"]=> string(74) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/27/where-to-eat-on-long-the-trek-on-the-5/feed/" } ["http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/"]=> array(2) { ["comments#"]=> int(1) ["comments"]=> string(1) "1" } ["http://rssnamespace.org/feedburner/ext/1.0"]=> array(2) { ["origlink#"]=> int(1) ["origlink"]=> string(69) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/27/where-to-eat-on-long-the-trek-on-the-5/" } ["summary#"]=> int(1) ["summary"]=> string(233) "Believe me, the drive on the 5 is a food desert. I know, because I love Burning Man, San Francisco and have numerous friends and family in the Northern part of CA, so end up driving north a couple of times a year. It’s a..." Read on…

As I suspect is true of most hard rock fans my age (or perhaps a little younger,) the Scorpions first hit my radar with their Love At First Sting album in 1984. That was the album that featured the anthem “Rock You Like A Hurricane.” It was followed closely by 1985′s World Wide Live. Even now it’s hard to believe those records (yes, they were “records” back then) were released 25 years ago. Harder still to believe that Rudolf Shenker started this band in 1965.

Scorpions (with guests, Cinderella) are coming to the new(ish) Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario on Thursday, July 29, and we’ve got your tickets. Well, not mine actually…
In 1990, a friend who was working for Mercury Records was taking advantage of the “free meal on your birthday” deal at the Denny’s on Sunset Blvd. While “dining” (seriously, it’s Denny’s; the quotes around that word are deserved,) in walk the Scorpions, who were in Hollywood recording “Crazy World.” They recognized my friend, as they had just met her at the Mercury offices, and discovering it was her birthday, they all gathered round her table to sing “Happy Birthday.” The Scorpions. Singing “Happy Birthday.” At Denny’s. A happy birthday indeed.

Okay, now you.

" } ["wfw"]=> array(2) { ["commentrss#"]=> int(1) ["commentrss"]=> string(70) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/27/win-tickets-for-scorpions-farewell/feed/" } ["http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/"]=> array(2) { ["comments#"]=> int(1) ["comments"]=> string(1) "1" } ["http://rssnamespace.org/feedburner/ext/1.0"]=> array(2) { ["origlink#"]=> int(1) ["origlink"]=> string(65) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/27/win-tickets-for-scorpions-farewell/" } ["summary#"]=> int(1) ["summary"]=> string(230) "After 45 years (yes, 45!) the Scorpions have decided to lay down their guitars. Lemon Avenue, just a few doors down from the intersection Myrtle and Lime.

I’m even moving while I’m typing this post right now.

Not only can you learn to pole dance and have a make-over here, you can get a dye job and a Brazilian as well because what’s a goddess without a decent pelvic thrust and a body smooth as a balloon? I know I’m ridiculously retro, nay, even prehistoric, to question the empowering nature of stripper heels and hairless twats–I admit, my feminism got beached before the third wave–but can we at least agree that these things are not “fitness”? For god’s sake LA, get a grip. This is not an easy town to be a woman in. Truly.

And then there’s the video.

The chances of you getting off the waitlist is virtually zilch, so I’d suggest you sign up before it’s too late.

" } ["wfw"]=> array(2) { ["commentrss#"]=> int(1) ["commentrss"]=> string(78) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/27/phototasting-or-how-to-make-food-look-good/feed/" } ["http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/"]=> array(2) { ["comments#"]=> int(1) ["comments"]=> string(1) "2" } ["http://rssnamespace.org/feedburner/ext/1.0"]=> array(2) { ["origlink#"]=> int(1) ["origlink"]=> string(73) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/27/phototasting-or-how-to-make-food-look-good/" } ["summary#"]=> int(1) ["summary"]=> string(247) "My existential dilemma over the last few weeks has been over what camera to buy. So much so that I have been pretty much paralyzed at the checkout counter, my Amazon shopping cart holding the Canon G11 one day, the Lumix LX-3 the next. Over..." All their vegetables are from their very large ranch, so were pretty good.

" } ["wfw"]=> array(2) { ["commentrss#"]=> int(1) ["commentrss"]=> string(74) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/27/where-to-eat-on-long-the-trek-on-the-5/feed/" } ["http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/"]=> array(2) { ["comments#"]=> int(1) ["comments"]=> string(1) "1" } ["http://rssnamespace.org/feedburner/ext/1.0"]=> array(2) { ["origlink#"]=> int(1) ["origlink"]=> string(69) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/27/where-to-eat-on-long-the-trek-on-the-5/" } ["summary#"]=> int(1) ["summary"]=> string(233) "Believe me, the drive on the 5 is a food desert. I know, because I love Burning Man, San Francisco and have numerous friends and family in the Northern part of CA, so end up driving north a couple of times a year. It’s a..." Read on…

Want to win a pair of tickets to the show courtesy of Goldenvoice and blogging.la?

" } ["wfw"]=> array(2) { ["commentrss#"]=> int(1) ["commentrss"]=> string(70) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/27/win-tickets-for-scorpions-farewell/feed/" } ["http://purl.org/rss/1.0/modules/slash/"]=> array(2) { ["comments#"]=> int(1) ["comments"]=> string(1) "1" } ["http://rssnamespace.org/feedburner/ext/1.0"]=> array(2) { ["origlink#"]=> int(1) ["origlink"]=> string(65) "http://blogging.la/2010/07/27/win-tickets-for-scorpions-farewell/" } ["summary#"]=> int(1) ["summary"]=> string(230) "After 45 years (yes, 45!) the Scorpions have decided to lay down their guitars. src="http://blogging.la/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/artwalkposterette-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" />Yup, you read the headline right. The First 50 kids 12 and under to show up at the Paint n Play 2 Art Studio and Gallery Saturday evening at 7PM will get a FREE ceramic project to complete while their parents visit the Art Walk. Paint n Play 2 is located at 418S Myrtle Avenue in Monrovia. This is the interactive part of the Art Walk that is being sponsored by the Monrovia Association of Fine Arts (MAFA) and Paint N Play 2.

The Art Walk will include a ceramics demonstration, wheel throwing and raku making as well as the fine art of another dozen or so artists lining the 400 and 500 block of South Myrtle Avenue in Old Town Monrovia. The July Art Walk set for this Saturday evening is dedicated primarily to the photographic arts, but you will also find painters and sculptural jewelry makers as well.

The August Art Walk is dedicated to Painting of all sorts and media. The interactive art will be a “paint-a-thon” with a couple of shared canvases with 2 MAFA Artists (I’ll be one and don’t claim to be a painter as an fyi). The Paint-a-thon involves painting layers on a canvas then swapping and working on the canvas your partner was working on. The public will be invited to grab a brush and paint on the canvas as well. In March Heather Shaw (local painter and ceramicist) did this at a studio open house and it was a lot of fun and well received by those in attendance. The final paintings will be auctioned off to benefit the numerous projects that MAFA supports during the course of the year.

If that isn’t enough, Monrovia has a burgeoning cafe culture with ample sidewalk dining opportunities. Take a break at any of them whilst you ponder what you’ve seen for the evening. A don’t miss in my book is Cafe Massilia which has become one of our favorite date day stops in Old Town Monrovia. Cafe Massilia is classic Provencal French and is located at 110 E.

" ["post_excerpt"]=> string(257) "The First 50 kids 12 and under to show up at the Paint n Play 2 Art Studio and Gallery Saturday evening at 7PM will get a FREE ceramic project to complete while their parents visit the Art Walk.
